What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (a hormone that reulates blood sugar) or when the body cannont effectively use the insulin it produces. Diagnosis can be done by a doctor thorugh relatively inexpensive blood testing. Most cases are one of two main types:

Type 1 Diabetes- formerly known as childhood-onset diabetes, Type 1 diabetes ocurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin and accounts for about 10% of the diabetes cases worldwide. The cuase is not known and with today's medical knowledge is not yet preventable. Type 1 diabetics are usually thin and diagnosed before the age of 20. Symptoms include frequent thirst and urination, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision.

Type 2 Diabetes- This is the most common type of diabetes and results from the body's ineffective use of insulin, and accounts for about 90% of the diabetes cases worldwide. The biggest cause is excess body weight and lack of physical activity. Lifestyle choices such as a healthy diet, 30 or more minutes of daily physical activity, maintaining a proper weight, and tobacco avoidance can prevent or delay the diagnosis. Often peple with Type 2 diabetes have no symptoms, but symptoms can include any of the type 1 symptoms as well as frequent sores and slow healing cuts or bruises.
